And Lloyd Irvin’s Newest Blue Belt is….

Category : My Path to Black Belt

I don’t know what school some of you may train at, but I can tell this, Master Lloyd Irvin does not give out promotions to just anyone.  To get promoted at one of his schools you have to EARN it.  If you do get promoted, at any rank, you have put in TONS of work and have been on the grind for hours, days, weeks and in most cases, even years.  That’s right folks.  Team Lloyd Irvin has a new Blue belt in its ranks.  He has been training as a White belt for over 3 years.  Like all Combat Athletes he has had his mental and physical up and downs.  So who is this mysterious New Lloyd Irvin Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Blue Belt.  Well… It is none other than the author of this Blog… JARED SMITH!!  Yes, folks I am now a Blue Belt.  But as my favorite Hip Hop artist Jay-Z would say… Now it’s on to the next one.  The journey has really just begun. Purple is next, but Black Belt is the GOAL!!!

I Need Your Help.

Category : My Path to Black Belt

I’m here, trying to figure out if I am going to do the Copa Nova Brazilian Jiu jitsu tournament this weekend. I feel I’m mentally ready but not sure I’m ready physically and not having much money to throw around right now is making my decision much harder. Finally, being able to go to BJJ practice, two nights in a row, I’m feeling the need to compete again. As much as I dislike running and cutting weight, I love competition a lot more. I am just trying to find the strength within myself to get the little things that I don’t like i.e. conditioning make me the jiu jitsu fighter that I am. I have LOTS of talent but that can only get a real fighter so far on the mat and in LIFE. Even though, I am going through some financial issues, it still feels like I have let myself, my team, and especially Master Lloyd down. By not doing the little things I’m am not living up to my potential as a mixed martial artist and let alone a martial arts student. I love this sport way too much to let my lack of effort put any smudge on it. So this is where I need my readers to really comment. Should I compete or not? http://copanovabjj.com/

Look Out World…

Category : My Path to Black Belt

So, another great night of training is now in the books. I didn’t have school tonight so I went to jiu jitsu practice. As always it was super fun. We did a quick warm up and when Master Lloyd came in, he had us get straight into rolling. There were mostly white belts and blue belts in class tonight. Right off the bat I noticed how much tougher all the white belts have become since I last worked with them on a regular bases, before I wasn’t able to attend as jiu jitsu class as much. This past weekend most of the team went to New York for the New York Open and boy did they clean up. From white belt to black belt Team Lloyd Irvin stomped the competition. The point that I’m getting at is if other teams in the Jiu Jitsu world think that the only people we have to make us the best American Team in the world, are people like Mike Fowler, JT Torres, Nyjah Easton. Well then, they got another thing coming. Not to give too much away to the haters out there but we are stacked with talent and we are only getting better day by day. The Mixed Martial Arts program is the exact same way. All I’m trying to say is look out “WORLD”. Here comes TEAM LLOYD IRVIN… WE THE BEST!!!
